5* Blythswood Square in Glasgow has won BEST HOTEL AWARD at the 2012 Scottish Thistle Awards…
Organised by VisitScotland, the Scottish Thistle Awards celebrate excellence and quality within the tourism industry. Now in their 20th year, they have undergone a major transformation and after extensive industry research, the awards have changed to include four new regional awards – Highlands and Islands, North East, South/Central East, South/Central West. The awards are widely recognised as the mark of excellence and professionalism across the industry, awarding businesses’ contributions to making Scotland a top visitor attraction.
Hans Rissmann, Managing Director of Blythswood Square, said: ‘To win this award three years after opening is fantastic for the whole team here. It proves that we have become established for locals and visitors to the city alike. Since the day we first opened our doors we have been welcomed to Glasgow by our neighbours, the industry and customers alike. We are thrilled that Blythswood Square is playing such an important role in the hospitality industry in Scotland.’
Tourism Minister Fergus Ewing said: “The tourism industry in Glasgow makes an immense contribution to Scotland’s economy and the Scottish Thistle Awards is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate excellence across the sector”.
Blythswood Square, located in the City centre, on one of Glasgow’s green spaces, it features 100 bedrooms including four spacious suites and an enticing top floor penthouse. The Award, organised by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, recognises the business that has invested in Glasgow in the past three years and has made a significant contribution to the local economy.
The five star luxury hotel, part of The Town House Collection, first opened its doors in the city in 2009 and since that time has welcomed guests from all over the world and hosted VIPs including organisers and stars of the Mobo music awards and The Scottish Fashion Awards.
Blythswood Square’s own stylish cocktail bar, The Salon, has served more than 125,000 cocktails since it opened making it one of the most popular destinations for locals too.
In an era when the environment and sustainability have become fundamental to any hotel build, the rescuing and recycling of one of Scotland’s landmark buildings into one of the UK’s top hotels which has brought tourism, corporate business and glamour to its city location have all combined to make Blythswood Square the ‘Best Performing Inward Investor.’
The award was collected by Managing Director Hans Rissmann, he said: ‘To win this award three years after opening is fantastic for us. It proves how quickly the hotel has become established for locals and visitors to the city alike. Peter Taylor wins Lifetime Excellence Award…
Peter Taylor, Chairman of The Town House Collection, has received the Catering in Scotland (CIS) Lifetime Excellence Award, making May a very rewarding month for the Scottish hotel group.
After graduating from Strathclyde University’s Scottish Hotel School, Peter worked with some of the world’s largest hotel groups before opening his first property in 1984, the Lundin Links Hotel in Fife. It was only five years later that he created Scotland’s first boutique hotel and from which The Town House Collection was born. Since that time, Peter has been the driving force behind some of the hospitality industry’s most exciting and successful town house hotels.
In 2006 the company made its first foray outside of Edinburgh with the acquisition of the former Royal Scottish Automobile Club in Blythswood Square in Glasgow. The iconic building is now Glasgow’s only AA Five Star hotel and boasts 100 bedrooms and a world class luxury spa.
Peter Taylor’s vision has always been that The Town House Collection would be one of the best companies to work for; that his team be the best to work with; and that his hotels be the best in Scotland for guests to stay in. He is dedicated to the continued development and management of luxury hotels and the business’ mission is to provide a genuine, personal and memorable experience to customers, suppliers and team members. This results in a culture that both demands and achieves excellence.
Of his award, he said: ‘The hotel industry is not all about bricks and mortar but very much about people – the team – and I am fortunate enough to have a great one! It is a great privilege for me to receive this CIS Lifetime Excellence Award however it is also a true reflection of the efforts of a strong and committed team over a great many years.’
Within the industry Peter Taylor is recognised as a great ambassador for the tourism and business sectors in Scotland. He is a past chairman of British Hospitality Association UK and British Hospitality Association Scotland. In 2005 he was the OBE for Services to Tourism.
