Mal Spence, Head Bartender Blythswood Square Glasgow

Since the opening of Blythswood Square in late 2009, Head Bartender Mal Spence has been on the pursuit of excellence in cocktails and guest experience. 

"When we opened the hotel, I wanted to bring all my experience and knowledge from around the world to deliver something different and unique to Glasgow. The die had been cast in Peter (Chairman) & Hans' vision for the hotel, and after establishing a solid bar-team, myself and James O'Donnell, our Food and Beverage Manager, set about the task of creating something special.

We've done quite well in a short space of time, bringing a Class Award home to Glasgow and getting the only five out of five rating in the UK are particular stand outs. The bar book we launched in 2010 has set the bar pretty high for us now, but we are everyday looking to improve our knowledge, our product and service to a higher standard". Mal Spence

Mal has over 11 years experience in the bar industry and in this time he has competed in over 30 cocktail competitions in which he has won or been ranked in 75% of them.

In 2010 Mal won Mixologist of The Year at The SLTN awards.
