With the TV Show Mad Men becoming a hit, a Kennedy-era sixties kitsch is back upon us and it wouldn't be complete without the return of the cocktail hour.

There was a time when cocktails were enjoyed as equally in the living room as in the bar, and no kitchen set would be complete without the de riguer martini glasses and cocktail shaker.

So, to get us in the mood, here a selection of fine, vintage cocktails to celebrate the rebirth of cool, courtesy of Mal Spence, Head Bartender at the Blythswood Square hotel bar in Glasgow.

Ramos Gin Fizz Cocktail

Created in the late 1800's in New Orleans, the recipe was kept a secret until it was published in a newspaper by the Ramos brothers during prohibition after their bar had closed.

Created in the late 1800's at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel bar in Philadelphia, the drink was named after a gentlemen’s club that met there in the oak panelled lounge.
