The Cobbler
- 02 NOV 2011
This drink comes from the early 1860's.
A famous saloon keeper of the time, 'Professor' Jerry Thomas, published the first ever compendium of cocktail recipes and how to make them. It became known as 'The Bon-Vivant’s Guide' and is regarded as a somewhat bible by bartenders.
The Cobbler is said to be the first ever mixed drink to be blessed with drinking straws. The original contained either port or sherry. I twisted the drink to replace the port with Wine, making this a drink you can enjoy all year long. In the summer, I'd recommend a cooling mix of crisp, white wine with a pear liqueur, in the winter, go for a nice red like a grenache with a mix of cassis.
125ml White or Red Wine
25ml fresh lemon juice
12.5ml sugar syrup
25ml Fruit liqueur
Take a large glass, fill with cracked ice, add ingredients then stir once. Garnish with a veritable bouquet of mint (3-4 sprigs), and dress with a few berries. Smile!
