THE THERMAL EXPERIENCES AT SPA AT BLYTHSWOOD SQUARE

The Thermal Experience - 3 hours

Our thermal experience is a series of rooms designed to take your body on a wet and dry, warm and cold temperature journey. The physiological benefits of using steam rooms and saunas prior to receiving treatments are now well understood. The alternation of hot (saunas and steam rooms) with cold (ice fountains and cold showers) on your body actually helps to open and cleanse the pores in your skin. When your skin is clean and the pores open this greatly assists in the absorption of products during your treatments.

Other benefits include a strengthened immune system, improved blood circulation, enhanced detoxification processes, and reduced tension. Our thermal experiences will soothe, relax and detoxify your body, sometimes in advance of your spa treatments or sometimes just as a restorative therapy on its own.

Although there is no specific journey through The Thermal Experience we would like to recommend the following:

Start Your Journey - The Laconium
A laconium is a tiled room where the floors, walls and benches are usually all heated to a mild temperature of around 55-60 degrees Celcius. A favourite with the Romans who gave it its name, the laconium is a warm, not hot, room and a good place to start your thermal adventure. You can spend about 15 or 20 minutes here and relax in the dry, warm air as your body heats up gently and slowly. After a mild shower, you're ready for the next phase of the journey.

The laconium is also a good choice for people who like to relax in warmth, but find the higher temperatures of a steam room or sauna too challenging.

Lets Turn up the Heat - The Sauna
A sauna is a traditional dry air room that heats to 85-95 degrees Celsius. Sprinkled water can intensify the heat. Depending on how you react to the heat, you may only want to stay in the sauna for 5 minutes, particularly if it is your first visit.

Cooling off
To cool off after, or between heat treatments in the thermal suite, you can try our ice fountain - where you rub handfuls of ice flakes over your body. Or perhaps finish off with a refreshing shower, cooling brings your body temperature back to normal.

Moving On - The Saunarium
A saunarium is a type of sauna. In fact it lies somewhere between a sauna and a steam room, combining the benefits of both in a more moderate form.Temperatures are lower than a sauna, generally being between 60-70 degrees Celsius. A saunarium is also not as humid as a steam room with relative humidity averaging twenty percent.

Some Humid Heat - The Crystal Steam Room
Our Crystal Steam is where you will encounter wet, humid heat. Some people prefer the dry heat of a sauna, others the damp heat of a steam room, which is thought to be particularly good for clearing out the respiratory tract and helping you to breathe more easily. As with a sauna, you may only want to stay 5 minutes, depending on the temperature.

Time to Cool Down - The Tepidarium
A tepidarium is exactly as it sounds - a dry, tepid room close to the body's own temperature. You can stay in here for up to 30 minutes, cooling down and de-stressing.

Hydro Pool and Vitality Pool
Our Hydro Pool and Vitality Pools are designed to aid in the relaxation of tired and aching joints, the pools contain a selection of hydrotherapy body jets, floor jets and seated areas with jets to gently massage the entire body.

For the more energetic users we have our swimming jets, you can burn calories, strengthen muscles or soothe the body by swimming against gently or increasingly insistent current. These pools can be interspersed between your journey please remember to refresh and invigorate yourself with a shower before using the pools

Cooling Off
To cool off after, or between heat treatments in the thermal suite, you can try our ice fountain - where you rub handfuls of ice flakes over your body. Or perhaps finish off with a refreshing shower, cooling brings your body temperature back to normal.
