When considering the name for the new bar we decided to go back to the building’s roots. The Consulting Room reflects the heritage of the building at 35 Drumsheugh Gardens which was once a private clinic established by surgeons, Captain Henry Wade of the Scottish Horse Mounted Brigade and Professor David Wilkie of Edinburgh University.*
In the early 20th century, surgeons were not paid by hospitals and were forbidden from accepting money, so these doctors offered their services voluntarily and made their money through private clinics. Many patients would have been helped in the building which is now The Bonham.
When the hotel first opened its door in 1998, it quickly became established as ‘the’ boutique hotel in the city offering luxury accommodation and classic dining - primarily for residents. However, with the introduction of The Consulting Room, local residents now have somewhere new to enjoy an early evening glass of wine on the way home; groups of friends can meet for a lighter lunch option or residents can enjoy a cocktail before heading through to dinner.
‘The Consulting Room is a welcome addition to our hotel and we hope it will quickly become a favourite with our neighbours too. When thinking about the name for our new bar, we were fascinated to learn of the history of the building and that it has played such an important part in the history of Edinburgh’s west end. We hope that our own ‘prescriptions’ will prove to be as popular!’ Johanne Falconer, General Manager
