My boyfriend and I were staying in Edinburgh for a couple nights on a trip to the UK. After literally hours (probably days) deliberating on hotels, we decided to splurge on this one, and it was one of the best choices we made for our trip. The hotel staff were friendly, flexible and accommodating - special shout-out to the breakfast chef who still served us coffee and tea after breakfast serving time. We really appreciated that! The room was cosy, and about as quiet as a period building near the centre of a capital city could be! The bathroom was like an oasis and the best we had on our whole trip. It's a short walk from the city centre (took us about 15-20 minutes to walk to the castle!) and there's plenty of lovely restaurants nearby if you missed the hotel breakfast or (for some insane reason) you didn't want the hotel breakfast. We really enjoyed our stay, it was a cosy, welcoming retreat after wandering the city for the day and would highly recommend it to anyone!
We were celebrating my husband's birthday with our first trip to Scotland.
The Bonham exceeded our expectations from the minute we walked in.
Staff were courteous, helpful, answered endless questions with inside knowledge and humor, and went out of their way to accommodate us. Breakfast was a great selection of a cold buffet or numerous hot dishes -- since we stayed 9 nights, we got to try them all and each one was a wonderful way to start the day. The hotel's location was ideal for us -- a quiet street but still within easy walking distance of the New Town, Princes' Street, and eventually the Castle. As for the rooms- we actually had 3 (due to booking errors on my part). The first, on the 3rd floor, was spacious, with a lovely view over the back -- very comfortable bed, chairs for reading/writing, great light. The second was too small, dark and hot -- and staff bent over backwards to accommodate us in upgrading to another room in a day. The final room - 100 -- was amazing. Although it was more expensive than the other 2 rooms, it was worth it. A separate sitting room; a very large bedroom overlooking the front; comfortable chairs; and a great bath (water from the sides as well as the top, fun). We ended up spending a lot of time in our room because we liked it so much!
As for seeing Scotland -- staff helped us arrange great tours of the Highlands and Inchcolm Island; told us how to get around Edinburgh; and talked to us about their own experiences of the country. History, natural beauty, spirituality, and haunting emptiness -- Scotland has it all.
As for meals -- dinner at the restaurant was a lovely experience. Fresh, delicious food -- choices of red meat, poultry, and fish as well as vegetarian risotto. Wonderful desserts. Different menu options depending on the night - so be careful to ask beforehand what choices will be available when you book.
A real highlight for us was High Tea in the Bar one afternoon -- very romantic and special.
Cannot say enough good things about the staff -- their interest in us, anticipating our needs and helping throughout our trip -- made this a memorable trip. Go.
We stayed overnight at The Bonham for 1 night in May 2015. Lovely hotel with very friendly & helpful staff. We experienced champagne afternoon tea & breakfast with The Bonham & we fairly enjoyed both. Definitely recommend a stay at this hotel.
Last weekend was my umpteenth birthday – and 'N' chose to surprise me with a weekend in Edinburgh, choosing the Bonham on past experience, and because you are dog friendly too. After arriving at Waverley Station we were transported in style, warmly welcomed, and shown to a well appointed comfortable suite with a fantastic view of Drumsheugh Gardens. Louis (charming, willing and always with a smile) had ensured we had dog bowls, bed and a toy for Sam, and was most attentive and professional towards us for the entire weekend.
The food was superb, especially the wonderful picnic created by your kitchens. The quiches were well filled in good crisp pastry, the scotch eggs sublime, the desserts top drawer. Perhaps the portions were too generous (given we had a good Bonham breakfast earlier) but the thought and hard work was well appreciated. The 6 course taster menu was wonderfully cooked, balanced and presented. Special mention must be made of your ‘home made’ crusty bread – which must surely be competition standard. We absolutely loved it!
The cars you arranged transported us in beautifully presented vehicles, with knowledgeable, amiable chauffeurs, and again were thoughtful to our needs and went the extra mile to ensure our comfort. The masseuse who relaxed us were similarly attentive.
Please would you pass on our thanks to Simone, Louis, and all the great staff who contributed to our brilliant experience. We felt very much at home. No doubt we will again return one day.
Visited for 1 night - 7th April 2015. Good location, handy for sights, shopping and eating houses. Elegant, comfortable room overlooking pretty square in front of hotel (room 204). Public rooms beautifully decorated in 'grand Edwardian with modern twist' style. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Delicious, hearty, Scottish breakfast. Well stocked, cosy bar had my husband's favourite whisky! A lovely stay. Would definitely return on next visit to Edinburgh.
