My partner and I stayed at The Bonham Hotel on 16 January 2015 for one night to celebrate his birthday.
We have stayed at the sister hotel, Blythswood Hotel, Glasgow and had a wonderful experience, so were expecting similar.
The hotel is a ten minute walk from Haymarket train station.
Whilst a beautiful building, its kerb appeal is marred by the rusty downpipe at the front left hand side which could be easily remedied and greatly improve first impressions.
On entry we were met by a rather gruff male receptionist who booked us in rather robotically outlining procedures that he obviously had said many times before.
The room (205) was a lovely, high ceilinged beautiful room with a big superior king sized bed. The décor is contemporary with green and pink, and there were 8 lamps which allowed for individual themed lighting.
I did not like the large picture of adolescents overlooking the bed.
There was a large cupboard for hanging up clothes with a small handful of coat hangers. This was perfectly adequate for us as we were only staying for one night, but if it was a longer stay, allowing for more clothes hanging and a chest of drawers would be required.
In the cupboard there was also a trouser press, hair dryer, iron and ironing board.
There were tea facilities and a mini bar.
I really liked the touch of having a handful of up to date magazines to read, and Wi-Fi in the room.
I also liked the history outline of the building in the documentation, and was therefore able to look up the Architect, John Lessels, and research all the other properties he had designed.
The bed was very comfy. However, for me the feather pillows were too soft.
There was a big TV, but no DVD player which was a shame as we had brought a final part of a thriller series which we wanted to relax and watch.
The atmosphere downstairs in the bar and reception area was non-existent and we went out for dinner.
The breakfast catered well for all tastes – with cereals, porridge, kippers, full Scottish breakfast, vegetarian breakfast, eggs benedict, eggs royale, eggs Florentine.
Service was very attentive.
Couple of pernickety things I would recommend enhancing – fix the leaking sink in room 205 (sorry we meant to mention at check-out), check over laundry to ensure towels do not have make-up on them, check over tea pots so not serving a cracked one.
All in all we enjoyed our stay, but not got quite the panache of its sister.
All the staff are friendly and immaculately dressed. The room was spotless, warm and comfortable, with all you need for your stay. The hotel was beautifully decorated and the breakfast was plentiful, with something for everyone; we ate at about 8am though, so probably beat the rush. We didn't have dinner, so I cannot comment on that. The hotel is situated in a quiet neighbourhood but close enough to the main attractions, so you can walk to them easily. If you are coming form the airport I suggest catching the tram as it stops very close by. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again when I return to Edinburgh. Thank you to all the staff at The Bonham for a very enjoyable short stay in your lovely city.
Have just spent a lovely night at The Bonham. We bought a great value Itison deal and were delighted to be upgraded to a junior suite on arrival. Our suite was very stylish. Our offer gave us fizz & goodies in the room, £25 per person towards dinner, breakfast and a late checkout! We ate from the festive menu and dinner was very good. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. It was a most relaxing break.
stayed one night as treat for my daughters birthday, great place. Nice staff, Hotel nice and warm, great view from our room, very central to shops, xmas market. would love to stay again.
Great hotel with beautiful period features and elegant, tasteful interior design. The room was fabulous with magnificent views from the wide bay window. The staff were very friendly and eager to help. I particularly liked the hotel bar, where one can find a well shaken vodka martini.
